I went to the Theatre Communications Group (TCG) conference for the first time this year, thanks to Pig Iron Theatre Company.
One of the highlights for me was seeing Anand Giridharadas speak during one of the plenary sessions. HowlRound has a lot of video from the conference posted, but not his speech, sadly. This version has many of the same elements, but misses the part where he noted that he often speaks in rooms (like the one at TCG) where the audience is pretty homogenous politically, and talked about weaving the two Americas back together, and how impossible that is if we stay in all the same rooms. I also appreciated his point that there’s a huge need for reconciliation and a huge need for resistance. Resistance is an easier reaction for me, but I think he’s right that we need both strategies in this moment.
